Vision and Prayer
The reality is that Junior High is an extremely challenging and difficult time. The world begins to say one thing, choices need to be made, and life begins to change in a manner that seems all too fast and even unbearable at times. In the midst of all the chaos, confusion and uncertainty, the invitation we find in Scripture is the person and work of Jesus Christ.
At Calvary Creekside the heart and vision for Junior High is really a reflection of the vision and values for the larger Calvary Creekside church body. Don’t have to wait, God wants to move and captivate the lives of young people.
1. LOVE JESUS: THIS SEEMS SIMPLE BUT WITHOUT JESUS THERE IS NO HOPE.
The Love of Jesus to us: In Ephesians 3, Paul prays that the church would “have the strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with the fullness of God.” Paul’s heart is that the Christian would first begin to “know the unknowable” love that Jesus has for them. I pray that Jesus’ love for the youth compels and motivates their lives. I pray that the youth would grow in their understanding of the love Jesus first has for them even while a sinner.
Responding to Jesus’ love: What is the response we are to have for Jesus’ love to us? Is that response personal? Jesus asks us all the most important question we must answer in Matthew 16, “Who do you say that I am?” Not what do your parents say, not what does the culture say, not what does your friends say, but who do YOU say that Jesus is? As each Junior Higher grows, my prayer is that their response and relationship and love for Jesus would be personal and real. There would be no borrowed faith but a real and growing understanding that Jesus paid the price for my sins. My sin put Jesus on the cross, yet He still stood in my place and forgives me. The fruit of this is that a personal relationship shows itself in public ways.
2. LOVE PEOPLE: THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP THAT’S PUBLIC. ISN’T THIS THE 2ND GREATEST COMMANDMENT?
Love the people right in front of you: Friends, family members, peers – God has placed certain people in each of our lives. As the youth grow in their relationship with Jesus my prayer is that they would also grow in sharing Jesus and demonstrating His love to those right in their sphere of influence. My prayer is that they, as disciples of Jesus, would be the ones who do the influencing, that take the lead, and that stand firm in their convictions and beliefs. By God’s grace the youth should be growing in “be in the world, but not of the world.”
Love the Church: This is huge. Don’t say you love Jesus but don’t love His church. Jesus said He would build His church. The Bible says that Jesus died, yes for you and me, but He died for His church as well. If you love Jesus, one of the outflows of that is that you will love His church. As the New Testament continues after the ascension of Jesus into heaven, the Biblical authors and apostles such as Paul, James and Peter planted, started, pastored, cared for, wrote to, and gave their lives to local churches. A majority of the New Testament letters are written to local churches. When the New Testament speaks of the work church or gathering, it is overwhelmingly referring to the local expression of the church with elders, pastors, regular gatherings, corporate worship, communion and baptism, and living life together as a missional and local community. That being said we want to cultivate a love for the church in the youth. Youth group is not a separate club or group. We will strongly encourage the youth to participate in Sunday morning worship and preaching and to be known and love on people outside their own age group.
Love the Local Community: Serve here and now. Even at a young age, the youth will be challenged to serve outside the walls of their own lives. Their are plenty of needs in Whatcom County that we can be a part of. The idea is that we would have the heart of Jesus, the compassion of Jesus and act upon that in a way that reflect His character and brings God glory.
Love the Nations: Go and follow whenever, wherever. Providing opportunities to go in different parts of the world to serve and love people is a wonderful opportunity for the youth. Cultivating a heart that will answer the call of God whenever and wherever is so important for the Christian. Hopefully, as the Lord leads we will be able to do missions trips to different parts of the world both domestic and abroad.
3. LOVE HIS WORD
Youth Ministry meetings at Calvary Creekside our focused and centered around the teaching and preaching of God’s Word. The one thing that will not return void is God’s Word. The one thing that will not pass away is God’s Word. The Bible says that God honors His word even above His own name.
The point is, is that when we gather the Bible will be opened and Jesus will be preached.
